Steven English
First memories of playing in a brass band at the age of ten are of playing the first few notes, getting completely lost, then waiting for the long note at the end to join in with! There have been a few improvements since then with time spent in various school and concert bands as well as Salvation Army music groups including the Melbourne Staff Band and Solid Rock Big Band. Tours with the Melbourne Staff Band included the 1978 tour of Europe & Great Britain for the centenary of The Salvation Army and the 1984 tour to the USA and Canada. Studies at the Conservatorium of Music in Melbourne widened musical experience into orchestral and brass ensemble areas.
Life then took a different turn and Steven became a Salvation Army officer stationed at various times in Victoria, Western Australia and Tasmania. Ending this role in 2001 Steven moved to Launceston in Tasmania where he was both player and musical director of the City of Launceston RSL Band. A work relocation to Sydney in August 2007 has created the opportunity to play with Warringah Concert Brass on the instrument that was his first love – soprano cornet.
