Anna Doukakis

Anna Doukakis can’t remember a time where she didn’t want to play the trumpet. However, she made do with the piano until a trumpet resting upright on her knee was only slightly higher than her head (at age 8). Her teachers have included Reg Bishop, Warwick Alder and John Kellaway.

Anna’s interests were firmly in orchestral and jazz playing – brass bands were those strange people who sometimes turned up to concerts and didn’t play proper instruments.

In 2001, despite a then militant dislike of the instrument, Anna “helped out” Gosford City Brass Band for “just one contest” on solo cornet. She has been playing ever since, migrating from part to part, and cornet to horn and back again, eventually joining Waratah Brass - Newcastle under Ron Prussing. After playing “Music of the Spheres” at the Adelaide Nationals, Anna became a true band addict, though she still loves her trumpets. She joined Warringah Concert Brass on tenor horn in 2008.

Anna is currently writing a PhD in Malayan history at the University of New South Wales. Her newest hobby is hula-hooping.
